• General Comment. 2 (Pierre or Perus) of "Rynheath" (? Purchased from Honoratius, 5.6, ?) Graaff Reinet, Kimberley and Wynberg (1825 - 1906) (Lyn Shaw's mother's grandfather) Married Wilhelmina Johanna Rolande van der Riet (1827 - 1909)
• General Comment. 2 Born in about 1824 (possibly 1825) and died 28.9.1906, married in +1848 to Wilhelmina J.R. van der Riet (b. 1826 - d. 1909), and died in 1906 at his residence Rynheath in Wynberg. Florie Hardy used to talk about Helperus Ritzema, her "grandpa", with great affection. She said that Helperus Ritzema and his wife lived in some luxury in the Graaff Reinet district - she thought on the farm Rynheath (which he probably bought from Honoratius). He lost his money when one of his brothers got into financial difficulties - probably Joachim Johannes Maynier in 1863 - and the family trekked by ox wagon to Kimberley, where he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. There he recovered financially, but living conditions were hard in those diamond days and for a while the family lived in a tent. In Kimberley, the family met Servaas van Breda, who, according to Florie Hardy, was director of De Beers, and an associate of Rhodes. In 1875, one of Helperus Ritzema's daughters, Anne Elizabeth, married Servaas van Breda. Her health suffered in the trying conditions of early Kimberley, and she was attended by the family doctor, "Dr. Jim" as Florie used to call Dr. Jamieson (who later led the infamous Raid). In about 1882, Helperus Ritzema and family and Servaas van Breda and family left Kimberley and came to Cape Town where Servaas van Breda bought the lovely farm "Hauptville" in Wynberg. The entrance was at the bottom of the hill near the Victoria Hospital, and the farm stretched to Plumstead on the one side and probably equally far on the other. In about 1993, the farm was converted to the Norman Henshilwood School. The two families lived at Hauptville - Helperus Ritzema and wife in one of the cottages - until Mrs. Van Breda died in 1888 (at the young age of 33). Then Helperus Ritzema and wife moved to a cottage in Wynberg, which Servaas van Breda bought for them. Florie Hardy remembers Helperus Ritzema as a very tall, straight-up, handsome man; with blue eyes, a long white beard and a benign kind face. She recalls how he used to take her to school every day in his cart - well before the advent of the motor car.
• General Comment. Extract from Reminiscences of sixty years experience on the turf and in sport By The Honorable G.G. Munnik (son of Jan Henrik Munnik and Grandson of Jan Frederik Munnik. His mother Maria Glaeser and his brother Fred Munnik). Background: Helperus Ritzema van Ryneveld belonged to a Coursing club, which would hunt steenbok from horseback using expensive greyhounds. The course was along the Tandjiesberg on the main road to Somerset East. ….. of the hard riders Helperus van Ryneveld, his son Willie, (Willem Cornelis van Ryneveld (1851 - 1878), a hotel keeper named McCusker, and I gave our horses no quarter and were always in the leading rank behind the dogs. …….Our coursing club consisted of about 50 members, and the most prominent amongst them was Mr. Helperus van Ryneveld, who owned the farm "Rynheath", about 9000 morgen. He was invariably present at a meet, on a well-bred horse, while his pretty daughter Sophie (Maria Sophia 1849 -1915) was always splendidly mounted on a well-bred mare called "Maid of Rynheath". Miss van Ryneveld was such a favorite with us that she gained the "sobriquet" of the "Maid of Rynheath." Page 79 - 81. According to War van Ryneveld there was not a lot of love lost between his father who farmed at Driekop and Pierrie van Ryneveld's family. He said his father backed bills for "old Pierre". He said when Pierre recovered he did not give any money to his father which, he says resulted in them selling and moving down to the Uitenhage district. He said he remembered his father saying " Never back a bill, even for your brother." But according to Edith Goodwin it was Pierre who was ruined by helping a brother. The truth of the story is unknown.
• Obituary. The Late H.R. Ryneveld Last Sunday afternoon, at Wynberg, were laid to rest the mortal remains of a venerable and widely respected resident of the Peninsula, Mr. Helperus Ritzema van Ryneveld, who had attained his 82nd year. His death occurred at his residence, Rynheath, Wynberg, on Friday evening, after a comparatively short illness. Accompanied by his wife, he returned from Kalk Bay about 6 weeks ago, where it was their usual custom to spend a couple of months in the winter. The old gentleman had an attack of influenza, which confined him to his room, and from which he never recovered. He was the fourth son of the late Willem Cornelis van Ryneveld, the first Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate of Graaff Reinet, who, previous to receiving this appointment, held a commission as captain in the 93rd Regiment of Highlanders. "Oom Perrie", as he was affectionately known to a wide circle of friends, distinguished himself during the Kafir wars, and he narrated many an amusing anecdote of his early experiences during those times. He was a grand old man, and a thorough specimen of the old aristocratic families of the Cape. He spent about fifteen years at Kimberley, where he held the commission of a Justice of the Peace, and he was well known there. From Kimberley, he retired and lived at Hauptwell, Wynberg, with his son-in-law, Mr. Servaas van Breda. The late Mr. Van Ryneveld married Miss W. van der Riet, daughter of the late Johan W. van der Riet, formerly Civil Commissioner of Uitenhage. The obsequies were attended by a numerous and representative gathering of leading inhabitants of the Peninsula, at which the Rev. Mr. Du Bryn officiated. The pallbearers were Messrs. H. le Seuer, Louw Herold, H. Cloete, C.M.G., L. Cloete, V. de Kock, S.V. Cloete, James van Breda, Ivo Sampson and Van Blommestein. Among those present at the grave side were Messrs. T.J. Horne, late Surveyor-General, H. Horne, ex-Civil Commissioner, Hon. H.J. Dempers, M.L.C., S Cloete, S. van Reenen, Thomas Louw, Lewis Mansergh Visset, Sen., K. Louw, van Niekerk, Mrs. L. Beck and Rowan, and many other leading citizens, who testified by their presence to the high esteem in which the late gentleman was regarded. Among the chief mourners were Captain W. van Ryneveld, C.M.P., at present Acting Commissioner of Police, Cape Town and Mr. Anthony van Ryneveld, nephews of the deceased, and Mr. Servaas van Breda, son-in-law. Beautiful wreaths were received from far and near, and the coffin was covered with a profusion of lovely flowers, contributed by his wife and daughters, the Misses Connie and Ruby van Breda, granddaughters, Mr. And Mrs. C. Davason, Mrs. Wight, Mrs. James van Breda, Mrs. Bambridge, Mr. and Mrs. De Kock, Mrs. Burger and Mrs. Lind. Mr. Bryne, Mr. and Mrs. Reenen, Dr. Rowan, Miss Bamberger, Mr. and Mrs. A. van Ryneveld, Captain van Ryneveld, Mrs. Versfeld and many others. ---------- The graves of Helperus Ritzema, his wife, Willem and Anne were in the Wynberg cemetery. The cemetery was converted to a property development in the 1990s. Perhaps the grave stones were preserved by the Dutch Reformed Church.
