• General Comment. 2 NB with comments by AJVR.

Both Maria's parents were from Leipzig and both her father and grandfather were named Honoratius. Daughter of Honoratius Christiaan Maynier. Born 1789, died 1862.

Florie Hardy used to relate how she used to go out driving (in the white horse and cart) with her grandfather, Helperus Ritzema (Willem Cornelis' son). Whenever they passed the old main house of Bishopscourt, Helperus Ritzema used to tell her that Willem Cornelis and Maria had lived there (presumably from 1823 - 28, W.C. was Deputy Fiscal and Sup. of Police) and that Maria was responsible for planting many of the old oaks on the property. She apparently had rather a regal bearing, and was a strong driving force, while Willem Cornelis was more easy going.

Maria survived her husband. Shortly after his death she sold their house in Market Square on 15.4.1852 to a Mr. Noome for 9,500 Rixdollars (approx. £650). (extract from Noome's diary given in Els' booklet on Graaff Reinet on page 148). The entry goes on to say that the house had "plankvloere maar ook heelvat muise! Maria must have moved to another house in Market Square because the death notice of Honoratius Johannes Robert states that he died in December 1854 in his mother's house in Market Square.

According to Emmie Rademeyer, "One of her traits was that she could not bear to see anyone idle; she was always keeping everyone busy. Often when the old gentleman came home from his office he found her giving instructions for alterations to the old Drostdy, and if he made any comment, her comment would be "Ag Willem, gaan na jou kantoor. Hier in die huis sal ek die bevel gee."

I remember Aunt Susie (her granddaughter) having a bedspread that she made out of tiny bits of print. The old lady's bible and hymn book were always carried by slave girls to the Church porch and then fetched again after the Divine Service. Apparently the slaves were so devoted to her and the Landdrost that they refused to leave after their emancipation (1834), so they were split up among the children. Natie and Harriet got a particularly bad one, Marrietjie, who, when Natie had taken his wife out one day to show her a new carriage, stole £300 and poisoned his best dog. She was sent to a House of Detention in Cape Town for seven years.

Maria was generally regarded as a fine woman. Harriet's sister, in one of her letters, on hearing of her illness, said, "I think she would be a great loss to the family if she were taken. I have always understood her to be an excellent person in every way and a clever manager."

In 1799 Maria's father Honoratius Maynier was put in charge of suppressing the rebellion of the Burghers of Graaff Reinet. After the rebellion was over he was appointed by General Bundas as sole Manager of the Affairs of Graaff Reinet and Swellendam, having both the Landdrosts under his direction. He was also made a member of the Court of Justice.

In Nov 1801 Lady Anne Barnard says "Fresh disturbances have broken out at Graaff Reinet lately - complaints against Maynier, actions with the boers, a fieldpiece sent, more troops and Commissioners appointed to judge upon Maynier's conduct etc."

Maria died on 25.4.1862 at the age of 72.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
