• General Comment. He was at school at SACS and did well at both work and sport. He got the medal for the best student in his law exams. He played tennis for Western Province and rugby for UCT and for South Africa in 2 tests against England in 1910, playing in the half-back position with great friend Freddy Luyt. In 1914, he joined a horse brigade as a Trooper (5th Mounted Rifles - the Imperial Light Horse) to fight in South West Africa. Then in January 1916 to Tanganyika , then known as "German East Africa", still as a Trooper in the 5th SA Horse brigade. Then in June 1917 to England to join the Royal Flying Corps and qualified as a Pilot in the Royal Air Force, going through to France in October 1918, near the end of the War. After returning to South Africa, he joined his father as an attorney in the firm Dempers and van Ryneveld.
He was a Director of the Cape of Good Hope Savings Bank (the oldest bank in South Africa, founded in about 1830) from 1943 until 1969. At the Board meeting after his death, the Chairman said
"Gentlemen, I have the sad task to perform in announcing the passing away on 25th August, 1969, of our colleague, Mr. Clive van Ryneveld. I am, however, privileged to pay tribute to him because I personally enjoyed his intimate personal friendship and confidence for over 60 years.
It is not for me to assess his merits but as far as I am concerned, he will be remembered as one of the outstanding Directors of this Bank who gave unstintingly of his time and energy to the welfare and progress of this Bank.
He was a man in the sense of the word - sportsman, friend, and lawyer, and we as a Board are the richer for the privilege of having known his fine qualities of helpfulness, kindness and unswaying loyalty to his first love, the Grand old lady of St. George's Street."
In 1923, at Holy Trinity Church Kalk Bay, he married Marie Blanckenberg, and they set up home in Southfield Road Plumstead. They later moved to "Pine Lodge " in Austwick Road Rondebosch, and later built "Byways" (a thatched roof double storey house) next door and adjacent to Bishops in 1938. There they lived until his death in 1969.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project. This website can be found at First Fifty Years
