Major W. C. van Ryneveld, of Grahamstown, is 77 to-day and congratulations will be showered on him for he has long been an active and interesting personality in the city. He came to Grahamstown in 1876 as Registrar to the Hon. Mr. Justice Smith. He was transferred to the Registrar's Department as Assistant Registrar and Master two years afterwards. He served through the Kafir Wars of 1877-78-79 and the Basuto Wars of 1880-81. After the Basuto War he was appointed to the Permanent Defence Force as a Commissioned Officer. He retired in 1921 on pension, and was awarded the King's Police Medal for conspicuous devotion to duty as a Commissioned Officer in the Defence and Police departments of the Union for 40 years. This greatly coveted medal (in Police circles) was presented to him by Lord Buxton, the then Governor-General, at an investiture held by him in Johannesburg in 1921. Besides this he holds the S.A War Medal, Cape of Good Hope Service Medal, Basutoland 1880-81, King's S.A. Medal. He is still very partial to the horse, in preference to the motor car, and may be seen daily riding through the city or on the outskirts. In an interview with the E.P. Herald representative the gallant Major said that having reached be-yond the allotted span, Biblically speaking he ought not to be there, his many friends will wish him many years yet.
