• General Comment. AJVR Records:-

Jacobus Gysbertus van Reede van Oudtshoorn is described in all old letters and family records as "Baron van Oudtshoorn" but there is no proof that this title is correct. On his death notice his father, William Ferdinand van Reede van Oudtshoorn is described as "Baron".

I do not share this view. I believe him to be titled. Not proven finally.

• Correspondence. English Translation of a letter from J. van Reede van Oudtshoorn to Willem Cornelius van Ryneveld (1789 - 1852)
Cape Town
1st March, 1833
Dear Brother-in-law
On the 24th January I wrote to my Brother-in-law Berg about the care of the capital by the Heer Jan Hoets, the contents of which letter I asked him to make known to you. I have received no answer from you or Berg and that obliges me to write again to you personally. That capital which I owe to Heer Hoets (1) His E. has already obtained judgment for jurisdiction over ? and has himself become executor for it. This will save the estate enormous expense. Good management is needed. If you agree with the proposals I put before Berg I have no doubt that it will go better than people think.
Heer Hoets - namely to sell nothing by forced sale but to appoint one person for each party to handle the administration. Nephew Nootje has already offered his services for free. It will also be necessary for you, Brother-in-law, to appoint somebody as if you are represented by a person here I can take advantage of daily opportunity to increase the estate. You could be represented by my eldest son David as soon as I make him independent. I can come into the possession of a small house which costs £4,000 and brings in a monthly rent of Rds. 15. What is your opinion?
Write to me soon so that I can get busy. It is as much in your interests as mine as if the case comes before the Sheriff 5 or 6 thousand gulden will be lost to the estate.
For a long time now I have not been well but with God's help and support I am improving little by little. I believe Natie, our Brother-in-law has written to tell you of this.
Dunbar and his family arrived here the day before yesterday from England and found all well - but I cannot write to you about thus as I have spoken to him but little.
Now Brother-in-law, don't forget to write at once as old Heer Joets might be angry and His E. is getting old and people think he will not be with us long - and then it will be too late for us.
Martha and the children are all well and send greetings. Remember us to your dear Honna and Willie (2), and believe me to be
Your sorrowful brother-in-law
J. van Reede van Oudtshoorn.

Note 1: Heer Hoets: Jan Hoets described in Geslacht Register as "Hofmeester" in the Government.
Note 2: Honna and Willie are Honoratius Johannes Robert (Natie) and Willem Stephanus the two eldest sons.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
