bullet  Birth Notes:

Extract from Uitenhage Chronicle 27.5.1943 - 100th Birthday
" Mrs. S. H. Munnik - Great rejoicings took place from early morning to late at night yesterday when friends arrived to extend hearty congratulations and greetings to Mrs. S. H. Munnik, who celebrated her 100th birthday. Her reception room, which was never empty throughout the remarkable celebration, presented a charming appearance due to the very many beautiful bouquets and bunches of flowers sent to Uitenhage's much loved and highly esteemed resident.
Mrs. Munnik is really wonderful in her old age ever ready to crack a joke and full of humour. She possesses a charming personality and in spirit is as young as ever. She was born in Graaff Reinet on May 26th, 1843, in the year British Sovereignty was extended to include Natal. She is the daughter of William van Ryneveld, who had married Johanna Heugh, daughter of a Danish family, and who was at one time secretary to Sir Harry Somerset before he retired to Uitenhage. She was married at Humansdorp, her husband being Magistrate there at the time. Her husband and three sons, who were noted rugby players and educated at the Muir College, predeceased her many years ago. She has, however, three generations following her, her daughter-in-law, widow of the late Mr. Drew Munnik, her granddaughter Mrs. Clay (wife of Commander Clay who went through the Malta blitz), and two great-granddaughters, Ann and Susan.
Great excitement prevailed when the following cable was received and read out:
Buckingham Palace, London. - Mrs. Munnik, Caledon Street, Uitenhage, the King and Queen are much interested to hear you are celebrating your 100th birthday, and send hearty congratulations and good wishes.
General Smuts sent the following congratulatory message: Van harte geluk met u honderdste jaar. Mag die tyd wat nog vir u voorlę dus ryklik geseën wees. Gesondheid en groete - Generaal Smuts.
A sheaf of wires was also received from all parts of the Union. We join in the good wishes extended and hope Mrs. Munnik will celebrate many more birthdays.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project. This website can be found at First Fifty Years
