• General Comment. From http://www.archive.org/stream/uitenhagepastpre00sell/uitenhagepastpre00sell_djvu.txt

Mr. Peter Robert Heugh was born in Humansdorp , and is the son of the late Rev. W. F. Heugh, who was for many years minister of the Dutch Re-formed Church there. Mr. Heugh was sent to the Proprietary School, of Uitenhage, when Mr. Templeton was the head-master. Many boys who distinguished themselves in after life were schoolmates of his, and amongst them may be mentioned Chief Justice Rose-Innes and Judge Lange Later, he was sent to Wood- speen School, in Newbury (Berkshire), where he remained for four years. On his return to the Colony he went to the Diamond Fields, but afterwards left the diggings and entered the Public Works Department, where he was clerk to Mr. Adam Smidt. In 1875 he became Inspector of Roads to the Uitenhage Divisional Council. This he held until 1880, when he went farming at Kabeljouws River. In April, 1885, however, he again returned to Uitenhage, and was appointed Secretary to the Divisional Council. He has tilled this position since then, and his uniform courtesy has endeared him to all who have ever had anything to do with him, ofticially or otherwise. His beautiful farm '' Kamaehs," on which is the far-famed " Hell's Gate," is still a favourite resort for picnickers, and we may state here without fear of contradiction that there are few men more thoroughly popular in Uitenhage than Mr. Peter Heugh.

THE life of Mr. PETER ROBERT HEUGH, secretary to the Uitenhage Divisional Council, has not been free from adventure. He was formerly a Lieutenant in the 3rd Cape Yeomanry, and as a youth saw some hard fighting in the Marosi and Bastito campaigns of 1880 - 1881 . In the Anglo-Boer War of 1899¬ 1902 he rendered good service as Commandeering Officer and Officer in charge of the Remounts for the mounted troops in the Division of Uitenhage. Mr. Heugh is an excellent type of South African. His father was the Rev. W. T. Heugh, of Humansdorp, where the subject of this notice was born in 1855. Educated in England, at Newbury, Berkshire, he returned from College to the Cape, and occupied himself at diamond digging for a few years. In 1874 he entered the Public Works Department as clerk to Mr. Adam de Smit, the District Inspector of Public Works for the Colony. Two years later he was promoted to the post of Assistant Inspector, and was subsequently appointed Inspector of Roads to the Uitenhage Divisional Council.

In 1880 Mr. Heugh started farming in the Humansdorp district, but after four years' devotion to agricultural pursuits he returned to Uitenhage to fill the position of Secretary to the Divisional Council, which he occupies to-day.

Mr. Heugh is married to a daughter of the late Mr. H. W. Bidwell, and resides on his farm " Kamachs," Uitenhage. He is one of the principal men of the town, and takes an interest in its welfare and public concerns generally. Mr. Heugh is secretary to the Muir High School, and to the Dolley Memorial School. He has long been interested in Masonic matters, and is an S. W. of the Southern Lodge of Freemasons. He is also a Director of the Board of Executors.

• General Comment. He was a Freemason.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
