In this link P. Heugh's son Eward married Maria Van Ryneveld in Graaf Reinet in October 1844.

By inference P. Heugh's birth date would be 1795 to 1815

Married in St. Mary's Church, Port Elizabeth on Thursday 22 November (1855) by the Rev. W.H. FOWLE, Colonial Chaplain, Christian William, third son of Peter HEUGH, to Elizabeth Ann, third daughter of Edmund L. KIFT.

By inference this would place Peter Heugh's birth date somewhere between 1800 and 1815

• General Comment. A Petrus Johannes Heugh can be placed in Uitenhague see http://www.up.ac.za/dspace/bitstream/2263/5330/1/LeRoux_First(2007).pdf

Saval Omar was an imam in Uitenhage after he had been released from the service of Petrus Johannes Heugh. Imam A. Sirkhotte of the Caledon Street mosque linked him to the Durban Street mosque, but Omar had already died when the mosque was founded in 1880. He might be confused with imam Fiedienie Savahl who was involved with the founding of that mosque. He probably led prayers in a house mosque. He died in 1876 on a pilgrimage in Jeddah. CAD: MOOC 6/9/155, no. 2740, Death notice of Sawal (sic) Omar, 1876-05-02;
MOOC 6/9/8, no. 1535, Death notice of Sophia (Omar), 1836-05-17; S.O. 7/31, Return of slaves registered at the Slaves Registry Office, Uitenhage 1816-1829, folio 4, Petrus Johannes Heugh. My thanks to Jackie Loos for this clue.

Petrus Johannes must have been in Uitenhague somewhere between 1816 and 1829.

WOOLWASHING IN UITENHAGE

The industry of woolwashing was established in Uitenhage in the year 1858, and has been the means, together with the railway works and market gardening, of ensuring the prosperity of the town.

In the early days Messrs Uppleby and Co. began a business on the site of the present Union Works, with Mr. B. HARVEY as manager, followed by Messrs. HEUGH and FLEMING, afterwards F. and P. LANGE, Mr. GUBB (succeeded by his son, Mr. T. GUBB), and Messrs. ROBERTSHAW, STRATFORD, NIVEN, INGGS, SPENCE, SKINNER, BUTLER, GREWAR, and CLARK.

In this record Antonio Chiappini appears. Antonio Chiappini [38] and Petrus Johannes Heugh [48] were proven brothers in law.

• General Comment. The name Peter runs consistently through this leg of the family. The time line fits exactly. I have proof of the initial P. and have deduced (but not finally proven ) the name to be Peter.

It now seems likely that this is the same person as Petrus Johannes Heugh [48]. Petrus Johannes was born after 1780 (his parents marriage date)

His daughter Johanna Hendrika Heugh [13](Abt 1815 - 1889) was born about 1815. By deduction Peter Heugh was born between 1795 and 1780.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project. This website can be found at First Fifty Years
