bullet  General Notes:

At Queens College rugby became an official sport in 1824 and Arthur was selected for the first team. 1926 was the year of Arthur's ascendency and the team itched to try their mettle against the other Border Schools. That year they beat both Selborne College in East London and Dale College in King Williams Town and thus became the Border School Champions. Arthur had the distinction of representing the Senior Border Provincial side at both cricket and rugby whilst still at school as well as being the Head Prefect and the first team captain at cricket and rugby in 1925 and 1926. He was truly an outstanding athlete and scholar to achieve this amazing feat. He also was the recipient of the Nelson Shield, a prestigous Queens College award, in 1925. He is also recognised as the first of many outstanding athletes that have been produced by Queenstown schools.

Arthur studied medicine in England and returned to Queenstown to practise as a Doctor for many years. He qualified in 1879 and applied for his medical licence. He was a fine sportsman in every type of sport in which he participated namely, cricket, rugby, soccer and tennis. He was one of the founder members of the Swifts Rugby Football Club in Queenstown and at its first meeting on 12 May 1882 he was elected as club captain.

The Obituary for Arthur in The Daily Representative of 26 October 1933 read as follows:-

Death of Dr. A. WEAKLEY
Queenstown lost another old and esteemed resident yesterday with the passing of Dr. A. WEAKLEY, who died at his residence in Zeiler Street about 12.30 p.m. as a result of a heart attack. Deceased, who was about 80 years of age, has been in Queenstown for nearly forty years. He was predeceased by his wife some years ago, and has himself been in poor health for a considerable time. For well nigh quarter of a century Dr. WEAKLEY has been medical officer for the Native Recruiting Corporation for this area, and thus many, many thousands of natives bound for the Rand Mines have passed through his hands. He
was on duty as usual at the local office the day before he died. There are still many who remember Dr. WEAKLEY in his palmy days on the football field and tennis court. Sturdily built, and very muscular, the Doctor first played rugger then soccer football, and was centre half-back in the Caledonian team of 1900-1905, when for two seasons the team was undefeated. Dr. WEAKLY did much to gather the young people around him, and encouraged all to go in for healthy sport. While he was Railway Medical Officer, prior to becoming associated with the Native Recruiting Corporation, he had an extensive private practice in Queenstown, and was particularly noted for his skill with children. During recent years he has lived a very retired life, and devoted much
time to reading. To his family the sympathy of all will go out in their bereavement.

He married his cousin, Laura Weakley, daughter of Samuel from England.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
