bullet  Sources of information or noted events in his life were:

• General Comment. He married Maria, daughter of the Lord Chief Justice, Willem Stephanus Van Rynevelt, with whom he had a fortune of £10,000. When he retiredfrom the service on half pay he went to live at Walmer in Kent. After the death of his first wife he married a Miss Lewin. He later he went back to the Cape, where he died in about1846. By his first wife, he left an only child, Letitia, the last of the elder branch of the Nappers of Tintinhull.

• Military Service: 1832. 1832: late Brevet Major, Royal Artillery.
Charles Napier entered the Artillery and went out to the Cape of Good Hope as aide-de-camp to Lord Caledon; he was present at the taking of the colony from the Dutch.
He was present at the Battle of Waterloo on the 18th of June 1815, where he was severely wounded. When he retired from the service on half pay he went to live at Walmer in Kent.

NAPIER, Charles, Capt. R Artillery. Served SA as Lt 1806-1812, as Capt
1812-1813. 1808-1811 ADC to Governor Caledon. 31.7.09 mar (Rev Halloran) of CN of Tintenhall in Somerset, and Maria, d.o. W S van Ryneveld, Pres. of the Court of Justice. 1812 he was serving on the frontier. 14.5.1812 left
Uitenhage in command of a detachment of the R Artillery on return to Cape
Town. As ADC to Covernor Caledon he requested permission to absent himself
from regimental parades, but his request was refused by Lt Col. Cox, officer
commanding the Royal Artillery. He then absented himself without permission,
and was arrested on Cox's orders, in the presence of Caledon, who demanded
and eventually got an apology from Col. Cox after a protracted
correspondence with Gen Grey. 30.1.1840 Charles George Napier was witness to
the will of James Dunbar, signed at Wynberg.

"Marriages - Married by the Rev Dr. Halloran on Monday 31st July 1809, Charles Napier of Tintenhall in the County Somerset Esq., Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery and one of the Aides de Camp to His Excellency the Governor and Commander in Chief, The Earl of Caledon to Miss Maria van Ryneveld, the daughter of the Chief Justice."

Note: Dr. Halloran who was the Military Chaplain was officiating under assumed or forged orders.

Extract from the Kentish Gazette:- Married on the 21st Feb last, at Walmer, Charles NAPIER Esq, late Brevet Major in the Royal Artillery, to (Sarah) Ann, the youngest daughter of C. Lewin Esq.of that village. The gallant bridegroom (who has distinguished himself in his country's service, especially at the ever memorable conflict at Waterloo, where he was dangerously wounded) left Walmer with his youthful bride to spend the honeymoon at Albion House, Ramsgate, the residence of his friend J.Gubbins Esq.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson.
