bullet  General Notes:

Born 10 Jul 1915 in Ongar Essex, the eldest of 4 children, she trained as a nurse at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London, also at St Charlottes and St Bartholomew. She joined Queen Alexandria's Nursing Corps in WW2 and was posted to Oxford, India and then to Singapore. At the end of the war she returned to nursing at Great Ormond Street, and rose to Night Supervisor, the highest nursing post under matron. In 1953 she applied to be part of Queen Elizabeth's Nursing Corps and was posted to Kampala in Uganda in 1954. Within a few months of arriving there she met and then married Casper Hendrik Petrus Heine on 11 Dec 1954 in Kampala. The couple then moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where I made an appearance, and then onto Dar-es-salaam in what is now Tanzania. In 1964 we came to England and lived for a while in Essex, then Somerset and finally Buckinghamshire. Five months after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary Casper died on 17 May 2005, Dorrienne managed to spend two and a half more years in the home they had shared for 33 years, only to finally have to move to a local nursing home as her body failed her, but her mind was still active to the end.

• General Comment. 23 Dorri Roughley writes:-

She was posted by the Queen Elizabeth Nursing Corps to Kampala, Uganda where within months she met and then married Casper Heine. The couple then moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where Dorrienne Rose made an appearance, and then onto Dar-es-salaam in what is now Tanzania. In 1964 the family came to England and lived for a while in Essex with her parents, then Somerset, running a village corner shop and finally Buckinghamshire. Five months after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary Casper died. Dorrienne managed to spend two and a half more years in the home they had shared for 33 years, only to finally have to move to a local nursing home as her body failed her, but her mind was still active to the end.

• Occupation. 23 Trained as a nurse at Great Ormond Street, London, and as a Midwife at Queen Charlottes, London. Nursed for 4 years at St Barts, London. At the outbreak of war she volunteered for Queen Alexandria's Nursing Corps, but was rejected due to a foot problem, she was accepted a year later after a corrective operation. Initially served in a military hospital in Oxford, then India and Burma. Her final posting was on a hospital ship which picked up British servicemen who had been Japanese prisoners. She returned to Great Ormond Street and rose to Night Supervisor (at the time the highest ranked nursing post at night), but was stopped by the hospital Matron from applying to any other hospital, the same woman had objected to her joining the QAs. But she did like the post as she is a very shy lady, and the night time work allowed her to avoid having to meet and greet important people visiting the hospital. An opportunity arose for nurses from Great Ormond Street to join the Queen Elizabeth Nursing Corps, she was accepted and was posted to Kampala, Uganda.

• Religion. 23 Church of England.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
