• General Comment. Van Belkum, Jacobus (Subscriber Content)

(*Leeuwarden, Friesland, 2.11.1851 - †Johannesburg, 4.11.1933), clergyman and a leading figure in the NH Kerk, was the son of Année Marius van Belkum and his wife, Catharina van der Werff.

Van B. was educated at the Old Burger Orphanage in Leeuwarden, the institution to which he and his brother Pieter were admitted on 8.9.1859. In 1876 he completed his theological studies at the University of Utrecht, but although he passed his doctoral examination he never had the opportunity of completing his thesis.

In the Netherlands Van B. was successively minister of the congregation of Varik (1877), Steenwijk (1882) and Zierikzee (1889), served on various provincial church committees, and was also on the synod of the Hervormde Kerk in the Netherlands. Through the envoy of the Transvaal Republic in the Netherlands, Beelaerts van Blokland,........ he received a call (November 1890) from the congregations of Rustenburg and Zeerust, and after first hesitating decided to accept it. Van B., who served these congregations from 1891 to 1903, next accepted a call from Heidelberg (Transvaal) serving there until 1927 when after fifty years of service he retired. After the unsuccessful church amalgamation of 1885 he made an important contribution towards the reorganization of members and congregations in the Western Transvaal.

During the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) Van B. visited the commandos regularly until he was sent to the concentration camp at Merebank. When the war was over he was one of the leading figures in the Eastern Transvaal helping to rebuild the church and the nation. He continued to play a leading part as church secretary of the General Assembly of the NH Kerk from 1897 to 1922, and was one of the founders of the NH Kerk's theological training, instituted in 1917 at the Transvaal University College (now the University of Pretoria). He was also one of the driving forces in the erection of the church's orphanage at Krugersdorp.

Van B. was the father of church journalism in the NH Kerk. In September 1899 he started the church monthly, De Hervormer, single-handed, but this came to an end because of the war. When hostilities ceased he started De Transvaalsche Kerkbode which did not last long either. In 1907, again single-handed, he started the Almanak voor de Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk of which he remained the editor until 1928. In 1909 he again published the church monthly, De Hervormer, which he was in charge of until 1928. Here he made a number of valuable contributions, his 'Brieven van Oom Sarel', in particular, being of great cultural-historical importance.

Van B. married Anna Hermina Dekking of Utrecht and had four sons and three daughters. There are photographs of him in the NH Kerk Archives.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
