At their zenith, Utton's Dairy had 1200 customers and offered home delivery of milk, cream, ice cream, whipping cream, buttermilk, cottage cheese and eggs. On May 31, 1989, they made their last home delivery. At the time it was one of only about a dozen dairies in the United States still offering this service. Orion Utton started the dairy on Southside River Road near Aztec with a herd five cows in 1947. His initial funding came from the earnings he had made from his 4H animals while attending Aztec High School. Orion joined the Navy after graduating high school and was a WWII veteran. Not long after starting the dairy, he began attending New Mexico A&M (now NMSU) in Las Cruces. His brother Bill, who served in the Army Air Corps in WWII, took over the dairy's day to day operations. Orion rejoined the dairy full-time after receiving his bachelor's degree in dairy science in 1952. Until the late 1950s, the dairy raised their own cows and provided their own milk. At that time they began purchasing milk from a local cooperative, the Associated Milk Producers, Inc. They could bottle over one thousand ½ gallon bottles a day. On January 1, 1964, Orion left the dairy and began working at the County Agricultural Extension Office. He worked for the Extension Office for 22 and ½ years, over 16 of those as the County Extension Agent. Bill Utton bought out Orion's interest and he and his wife Fern continued to operate the dairy. By 1982, Utton's was the only local dairy still providing home delivery. They offered that service every day of the week except Thursday and Sunday. Over time competition from grocery stores caused their customer base to dwindle to around 700. And a special thanks to the descendants of Orion and Bill Utton for clarifying the history of Utton's Dairy.

Orion married Stinson, daughter of Robert Marion Stinson and Ruby Fidelia Lamb.
