Marjorie Saffell Martz Bauer passed away on December 3, 2005, of lung cancer at the age of 87.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Saffell and Norma Saffell; her brothers, Herbert Saffell Jr. and Robert Saffell; sister, Dorothy Walker; and infant sister, Elinor Saffell; first husband, Maynard Martz; second husband, Hally Bauer; and good friend, Ralph Benson.

She is survived by her children, Janis Martz Nees and husband Bud of Eureka, Terry Martz and wife Regina of Marysville, WA; grandchildren, David Shaffer and wife Siv of Arcata, Kim Lueras and husband Desi of Eureka, Dori Martz of Marysville, WA, JoBeth Martz Loreman of Everett, WA; great grandchildren, Christen Lueras, Angelica Lueras, Christopher Lueras, Anna Lueras, Michelle Lueras, Joseph Lueras of Eureka, Lisa Shaffer of Arcata, Laura Shaffer and Willa Shaffer of Tacoma, WA.

Marjorie and her family moved to Eureka from her Modesto, CA, birthplace when she was a child, following her fathers work as a carpenter. She attended Lincoln Elementary in Eureka, Stewart Elementary in Arcata, Eureka High School, and Eureka Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper at Lincoln Stationery, and at J.C. Penney downtown Eureka before marrying and having children. After her first husband was injured, she returned to college at Humboldt State and received her Teaching Certificate to support her family. She worked in the Eureka area from 1962 until her retirement in 1981 teaching primary grades, and kindergarten. She taught at St. Bernards, Cutten Elementary and Ridgewood Elementary.

She was active in clubs, lodges and organizations, including the Friendship Circle Dance Club, the Order of the Rebekah Assembly of California Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Businesswomen's Association, Retired Teachers Association, and was a member of the 1st Methodist Church.

Her family is very happy that she had a wonderful day on Thanksgiving enjoying her family and friends and the laughter and noise of the 18 people who shared her last holiday.

She enjoyed dancing, having her hair and nails done, and dressing well. She doted on her grandchildren and reveled in the company of her family. She donated generously to dozens of charities.

Marge's family is highly appreciative of the Hospice of Humboldt for the excellent care and concern during her illness and to Nurse Practitioner Kathy Sattler of Eureka Family Practice.

She requested that no services be held.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
