Catharina se geboorte is in Rotterdam, Nederland geregistreer, as d/v Cornelis Everts VAN DER ZEE.

(See on Internet: Admiralty House Simon's Town) (Ref Familia CD p 29 & 30: Farm: Diemersdal.)

Van der Westhuizen died, leaving the farm to his widow. Two years later she married Anthoni VISSER, who according to Historical Simon's Town, was the first European to settle permanently in that area, and who played an important part in its early development. Considering his activities in the Southern Peninsula and in Table Valley, it is very unlikely that he lived on his farm, Diemersdal, but he definitely controlled it from afar. On 2 Oct 1732 he was granted an erfpacht of 32 morgan 413 sq rds. "by syn plaats Diemersdal, thus confirming him as owner of that property through his marriage with Anna Maria BRONS. This is the only evidence that has come to light on his ownership.

Antoni and Anna Maria produced one child, Elizabeth Theresia ~ 26 10 1717 Cape Town, and she became the sole heir of her parents by a will executed in 1742. It seems likely that this will was made owing to the increasing age or ill health of Antoni and that he had died by 1745. This seems likely as although his wife, Anna Maria, was a witness to the baptisms of two of Elizabeth's children, born in 1745 and 1747 respectively. His name appears in neither case. We assume that both he and Anna Maria were dead by 1750, according to a transfer deed of that year. On 16 Feb 1744 Elizabeth married "Luitenant ter See, Christian Everhard Philip von Jungheim" of the warship, Die Hersteller. (Ref CD Familia p. 30).

b10 Jacob (Jacobus) VISSER *12 Jan 1695, ~ 24 Mar 1696

b11 Pieter VISSER ~ 24 Apr 1697 (G1, 8/1 p. 5)

b12 Maria VISSER ~ 28 Jun 1699 Stellenbosch, X Frederik BRAND *C1695 Stellenbosch

Lorna Newcombe wys na die volgende verwysing van Leibbrandt se Precis of the Archives of the Cape of Good Hope: Letters and documents Received 1649-1662' Deel 11: Letter from Delft dated 30.11.1660 p.164: "From our ships' books we found that the two following persons have become free men at the Cape, who, when they left, had incurred considerable debt for their outfit, which, however, they had not communicated to their creditors, viz., Jan Coenraadt Visscher of Eemnes (?), [Nota- dit is Leibbrandt se vraagteken] soldier from the Dort, who left Patria in 1657, was on the 8th May, 1658 drafted on shore as hunter, and made freeman on the 30th September, 1659. Lorna gee ook die volgende baie waardevolle inligting: Uit Letters and Documents Received (from Amsterdam dated 19 September, 1661) p.183 (eerste verwysing): "Ät your request we have granted a passage to one or two wives whose husbands are at the Cape, subject to the usual condition to remain there fifteen years. The wife of Jan Coenraetsz we have given f25 for her outfit which you may recover there.' P.S. These three vessels (Malacca &c.) take back to you three stowaways whom you are to treat according to the sentence passed on them by the court here." Maria was waarskynlik reeds getroud.

Volgens Heese, p. 184 was Geertjen 82 jaar oud toe sy vermoor was. (Ek wonder of die korrek is? Was sy dan 22 jaar ouer as haar man?) Moeder is dood! Moeder is dood!".

According to "Suid-Afrikaanse Geslagsregisters" 15 pages 12-13 Margaretha (Geertjen) Gerrits married Jan Coenraad Visser c.1662. She was his sister-in-law as he was first married to her sister Alida (Greetjen) Gerrits from Hardenberg in c.1648 in the Netherlands.

As far as SAG 15 (Suid Afrikaanse Geslagsregisters 15) notes, his 1st wife Alida Gerrits arrived in Cape Town in 1662 with 4 children:

•b1 Maria *Ommen, Netherland c.1649;
•b2 Gerrit Jansz *Ommen, Netherland c. 1650:
•b3 Gesina * Ommen, Netherland c. 1655 ;
•b4 Coenraad *Ommen, Netherland 1660, baptised in South Africa 16,1.1667.
What happened to Alida Gerrits is uncertain for in the same year that she arrived in the Cape with her children, her husband, Jan Coenraad Visser *1633, married her sister, Margaretha Gerrits.

The only children mentioned for Margaretha as 2nd wife of Jan Coenraad Visser *c.1633 is mentioned on page 50 of SAG:

•b5 Zacharias (Zacharararayda) baptised 28.8.1665
•b6 Johannes baptised Cape Town 16.1.1667
--------------

There is no documentary evidence that a person by the name of Alida Geeritsz (who would have called herself Aeltje) existed.

Margaretha, or Geertjen, would have had to be married to Jan Visser at the Cape, since he arrived here on 28th April 1658. No such marriage can be found.

Richard Ball thinks there were only one person: http://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk/olivier/I112.htmll

However, Mansell Upham argues that Jan Visser might have had two wives, Aeltje Gerritsz and Geertjen Gerritsz or Pietersz in Upham, Mansell, Hel En Paradijs - De Hoop Op Constantia on http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/ui45.html

The above information for Coenraad is wrong:

Coenraad, b4 was born at the Cape: 'Coenraad Jansz' Visser gebooren aan Cabo de Goede Hoop, oud vyftig jaaren ...(from his will dated 15 November 1710)

And this is his date of baptism at the Cape: 'April Anno 1663 Den 8en do heeft Dome de Metre ... gedoopt dese vier navolgende kinderen: ... ende een van Jan Coenraets Visscher vrij lantbouwer, en is genaemt Coenraet, de getuigen sijn Jacob Cloeten, vrij lantbouwer ende sijn huysvrouw' op http://www.eggsa.org/sarecords/index.php/church-registers/cape-town...

The entry for 16 January 1667 refers to Johannes's baptism:

A: 1667

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project. This website can be found at First Fifty Years
