Charles Francis Linnaeus STEVENS was born on 26 January 1892 in Darjeeling, Bengal.1,2 He was christened on 6 March 1892 at Darjeeling, Bengal.2 He was listed in the 1901 census as a boarder at Dane Court School in Poole, Dorset.3 He was listed in the 1911 census at Royal Military Academy Sergeants and Servants Quarters and Warrant Officer's House, Red Lion Lane, Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, London, Middlesex,4 working as a Gentleman Cadet, Royal Artillery.4 He was on active military duty as follows: commissioned 06.09.1911; attd 2/RWK (IUL); Indian Army 02.12.1912 (10th Duke of Cambridge's Own Lancers [Hodson's Horse]); France & Belgium 01.01.1915-??.03.1918; ADC 30.11.1915-30.05.1916; MC (London Gazette 25.08.1917); Egypt & Palestine ??.03.1918-11.11.1918; attd 9th Hodson's Horse from 1916; NW Frontier Campaign 1930; DAAG 01.01.1934-30.11.1936; Lt Col, Indian Cavalry Training Centre 01.03.1940.
His MC citation reads: Capt. Charles Francis Linnaeus Stevens, Indian Cavalry. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in successfully commanding and leading his squadron in a raid on enemy trenches. The task was thoroughly carried out and every one of the enemy accounted for.1 He was 2nd Lt.in the 2nd Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment (unattached) with rank from 6 Sept 1911 in the Indian Army List for 1912; and later lived in the Isle of Wight up to 1963.1
He married Geraldine N BARTON in Kensington, London, Middlesex, between January 1918 and March 1918.5
He married Evelyn Pamela STEVENS in Kensington, London, Middlesex, between July 1932 and September 1932.6
He married Evalene L J E CUDDINGTON in Plympton, Devon, between January 1949 and March 1949.7

The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson.
