Ottawa - Ashbury College Chapel, adorned with standards and baskets of large feathery chrysanthemums and white baby chrysanthemums, against a background of palms and woodwardia ferns, was the artistic setting for the Toller-Southam wedding on Saturday afternoon at three o'clock.

The bride, Miss Ethel Southam, is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry S. Southam, and the groom, Mr. Frederick Hughes Toller, is the elder son of Mr. Guy N. Toller and the late Mrs. Toller. Rev. Dr. G.P. Woollcombe officiated.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attended by Miss Jane Toller, cousin of the groom, as maid of honor. Constable G.B. Greene, RCMP of Regina, was best man for the groom, and the ushers were Mr. Harry Toller, Flight Lieutenant J.S. Irvin, Sub-Lieutenant R.W. Southam and Mr. R. Eric Blackburn.

The groom, best man and ushers attendant on the guests were all in uniforms of various branches of His Majesty's forces.

A gown of blush white slipper satin, designed on severely simple lines was worn by the bride. The 'V' neckline was draped and styled with a soft knot at each corner of the shoulder, and the sleeves were three-quarter length. Very full in front, the skirt formed a long graceful bridal train. Her blush white tulle wedding veil fell in filmy folds to extend to the hem-line of her gown, and was arranged at the head with a coronet of mother-of-pearl orange blossoms. A strand of pearls and a diamond pin were worn and she carried a bouquet of white orchids and bouvardia.

Miss Jane Toller was wearing a gown of American Beauty silk jersey, made with a high neckline with self covered buttons on the bodice front to the waistline. Quilting was used effectively on the short sleeves and the bodice and her skirt, which formed a slight train, was flarred from shirring to the hip-line. A tiara of fresh white pom pom chrysanthemums and bouvardia was worn in her hair, and she carried a bouquet of white snapdragon and white pom pom chrysanthemums.

Following the service a reception was held at Casa Loma, Rockcliffe Park, the residence of the bride's parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Toller left on a motor trip, and on their return will reside at 216 Rideau Terrace. Mrs. Toller wore a dusty pink wool dress for travelling, with a top coat of burgundy wool trimmed with blue fox. Her hat was a matching burgundy felt and her accessories of blue fox shade.

Out-of-town guests were: from Montreal, Mr. and Mrs. F.N. Southam, Mrs. F.H. Markey, Mrs. D.B. Seely and Miss Jane Seely, Mr. and Mrs. D. Cargill Southam, Mrs. Barclay Robinson and Miss Kathleen McConnell; from Toronto, Miss Elizabeth McClelland, Mr. and Mrs. James Peters and Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Osler; from Arnprior, Mrs. James G. Cranston, Mr. James Cranston and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cranston; from Hamilton, Mr. and Mrs. S. Clair Balfour and their daughter, Miss Joan; from Buckingham, Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Kenny and Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Kenny.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
