The records are unclear.

There is no doubt in my mind that Thomas Adlard married Elizabeth Hornby on 25 Jan 1669 this is well documented in LDS records. The problem is a number of children born before 1669.

These include:-
1) Thomas Adlard christened 1 Mar 1664 Wood Enderby
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NG7X-XLL
His father Thomas born in 1646 would have been 18!

2) Richard Adlard christened 22 Jan 1666 Wood Enderby
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NT48-WKM

3) John Adlard christened 1668 Wood Enderby
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J9RS-KS7

There are THREE children born out of wedlock! Given the ethos of the time this seems unlikely.

Perhaps the answer lies at
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJC5-SQB
Where Thomas Adlard marries Elizabeth J? in 1663 in Wood Enderby

And
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NVRW-J9S
Where Thomas Adlard marries Elizabeth ? in Wilksby on 04 Feb 1663.
Wilksby is a hamlet in Wood Enderby.

Therefore there were either two Thomas Adlards who married Elizabeths - One of whom was Elizsabeth Hornby.

OR

Thomas Adlard married Elizabeth J? in1663 and then Eliazabeth Hornby in 1669

Either way it would appear that
John, Richard and Thomas described above are the progeny of the 1663 marriage and not Elizabeth Hornby.

Furthermore it seems unlikely that Thomas Adlard born in 1646 would have married in 1663 aged 17!

The logical conclusion is there were two Thomas Adlards.
Logic decrees that Elizabeth Hornby is not the mother of our John Adlard. He could have been born out of wedlock. This is how it appears in several online records. I have left it so but I am not convinced.

In fact Elizabeth (1670 - ?) and Thomas (1673-1673) and Unknown Male Adlard (1674 - ?) could be the result of either marriage.

Its a mystery!

The problem is if our Thomas Adlard is in fact married to Elizabeth Hornsby their son John is born nearly a year before they were married.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
