And

Rolland Beaumont was a South African cricketer from the early years of the 20th Century. He was born at Newcastle, Natal, on 4 February 1884, and died in Berea, Durban on 25 May 1958, aged 74. He attended Hilton College.

Beaumont was a hard hitting middle-order batsman, and a good fielder, his first-class career spanned the years 1908 to 1914 and consisted of 32 matches, most of which were for South Africa during their tour of England in the wet summer of 1912. His first match of importance was for Wanderers when the Johannesburg club drew with a Rest of South Africa team containing S.J. Snooke and A.W. Nourse. He also turned out six times for Transvaal and represented South Africa at Test level in five matches against both England and Australia. His natural game would show Beaumont as a free-flowing batsman but too often he let an over-cautious nature restrict his talent. He scored his only first-class century, 121, whilst captaining Transvaal in a two-day match at Johannesburg against P.W. Sherwell's XI in November 1913. But in all first-class matches he only built six scores of 50 or more. His highest Test score was 31, compiled against the Australians at Old Trafford during the Triangular Series of 1912. No obituary appeared in Wisden for Beaumont after his death.

• Letters. My Dear Rolly, Foxley Jan. 23/28

I have tried to make the notes a bit clearer but as I am not very clear myself and Auntie only gets more mixed every time one asks her it is difficult. As you will see the first Richard was our and your great, great grandfather and I fancy he would be the one about whom there is a legend that he was displeased at the roystering ways of his family and cut himself off from them - most probably owing to the German marriage [ to Ann Gigner]. Probably this is where we get our tempers and obstinacy!! I cannot find any dates relating to him but probably the birth certificate or baptism certificate of his son Richard.Harris Beaumont the naval quarantine surgeon who would be in the records at Hemmingford 1772 would give the parents age name and address and in that way it would be possible to trace back further. I believe our branch of the family sprang from Beaumonts of St. Ives, Huntingdonshire. That last bit of information and also that about Harris B's will came from old George Russell and are likely to be correct.

Old Mrs. Field (cousin Frances) old George Russell's sister, now 92 and blind would very likely be able to tell you more. She is interested in pedigrees and as our Grandfather Wm. Beuamont's sister Mary married old Dr. Russell and was her mother probably she knows something of the family history. Anyhow it might be worth asking. Her mind is till clear and she has a methodical brain. Her address is 1 Cambridge Place, Falmouth, Cornwall.

I am sorry I cannot help more. I shall be interested to hear the result of the gentleman's researches and wd like a copy of the book when it comes out.

I expect it is owing to our descent from Mary Osborne we were always told we came over with Wm. The Conqueror. Although I believe the Beaumonts did also.

There would probably be records at St. Ives, Huntingdonshire, Hemmingford, Godmanchester, and possibly also at Bourne in Lincolnshire.

Please thank the children for their letters. Auntie was so pleased with hers. Her memory is very bad and her sight and hearing but she is wonderfully well.

I hope John will like his new school and that Jeanette is better. Helen did not say how you and she were - you had better run down in the car for a week end.

Much love to you all.
Ever yrs. afft.

My dearest Lala???

I am sending you a book I got from England "The Beaumonts in History - 850 to 1850" It has been compiled by a Mr. Beaumont at Oxford and is I think as authentic a publicaton as is possible. I want it, eventually, to go to Rolly, when he returns from his trip to Trindad. But meantime some of the members of the family might like to see it.

Aunts Emma and Edith might be interested. Anyway, you could let any who cres see the book. I enclose in his letter a memorandum giving my own opinion, I should like to have the views of others in the family. The book of course only deals with descendants in the mainlines of the families and no doubt there are crowds of minor families and branches whose history has been altogether lost: and our Beaumonts probably one of those. But how the insignia has got mixed up is a puzzle.

I am not writing you a letter as I have written to Aunt Emma and given all the news - my love and thanks to you and Alice for your letters.

We are geting very hot weather just now.

Don't hurry with the book, just keep it and lend it, as opportunity offers, before sending it to Rolly.

Your Affectionatley
Uncle Hal

My Dear Rolly,

Many thanks from us for the cheques. I do hope you liked the teapot etc. and that the probate mans price was all right, we should hate to think we had asked too much. Lala was over here yesterday copying out for you from the family tree, I remembered old cousin George Russell at Worthing gave me a few particulars some years ago which I wrote at the end of my address book. i am sending them in case they may be of any help.

I do hope some day to see you and Helen at my Cottage, they have pegun to dig up the pound unfortunatley they are not flags but smallstones, they will come in useful for a front wall I dare say.

Lots of love to you both.
Yrs Aff
Mary.

I suspect she is Aunt Mary Laura Beaumont. Her sister certainly lived at Fairfield, Chudleigh, Devon.

info There will inevitably be errors and omissions and the whole purpose of creating this online record, is to invite feedback and corrections.
The data is specifically for non-commercial use and my clear intention is to build family records. The data may, therefore, not be used in any way for the purposes of financial gain.

Caveat:- Throughout the project UK GRO birth, marriage and death index data appears. The GRO data appears in Quarters. Q1 = January, February and March, Q2 = April, May, June , Q3 = July, August and September and Q4 = October, November and December. Similarly, Mar Q = January, February and March, Jun Q = April, May, June , Sep Q = July, August and September and Dec Q = October, November and December. Where these dates occur, they represent the date of Registration of the event rather than the date of the actual event. Logically, registration occurs AFTER the event. In some cases this may be days or months or even years after the event. The important thing is that the event was recorded and a copy of the document of registration could be obtained if necessary. This also applies to South African NAAIRS records.

Similarly, the UK system is confusing to the uninitiated because registration districts can span several counties. Accordingly GRO locations may not record the true location of the event. They do record where the record is actually kept or recorded.

Caveat #2:- I have used URL's throughout the website as sources. The URLs are often from paid subscription sites so you may not be able to access them without an account. Inevitably there are broken URL's. I have been to every URL recorded here and at the time they were operational. In this regard, the Ancestry24 records are a problem. There are numerous references in the South African data citing Ancestry24 records. Unfortunately Ancestry24 has closed down and these records are no longer available on line.

The early South African records on this site would not have been as good as they are without the work done by Delia Robertson. Where there are website addresses containing http://www.e-family.co.za... I record the citation should read Robertson, Delia. The First Fifty Years Project.
